Shocking Deaths of Bollywood Stars shocked the whole Indian entertainment industry. Whereas some were natural, some were suicide and some mysteries still remain unsolved.
Divya Bharti
’90s successful actress Divya Bharti died at the age of just 19. Known for her acting versatility and beauty, the actress reached the peak of her career very early in her life. After giving hits like “Shola Aur Shabnam,” the Indian beauty was reported to fall off of her building complex in Bombay, Maharashtra, India on 5 April 1993. There was foul play suspected in her case. Some believed it was a murder, while others saw it as an accident, some even suspected it to be a suicide, but it still is a mystery.
Parveen Babi
One of the highest-paid actresses of her time, the actress was a dream of many men back in the ‘80s. Babi’s romantic attachment with the filmmaker is not hidden from her fans. She fell for the director while she was at the peak of her career. Even though Bhatt was married at the time, he lived with the actress. Due to her paranoia of being killed, she becomes more and more lonely. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. She was found dead on 22 January 2005 in her house in Mumbai. Supposedly, she may have been dead for up to 72 hours. It was reported later that she died on 20 January 2005 due to multiple organ failure. Apparently, the actress hadn’t had anything in 3 days and starved herself, which resulted in organ failure.
Pratyusha Banerjee
Known for her gig Balika Vadhu, the actress became a household name playing the character of adult Anandi. She later participated in the seventh season of the reality show Big Boss in 2013 and was the most competitive contestant in the show. She was found hanged in her apartment in Mumbai on 1 April 2016. The cause of death was reported to be asphyxia in the postmortem. In spite of no foul play reported by police, her parents believed that she was killed by her boyfriend. They later pressed charges against him. The case has gone cold for quite some time now.
Jiah Khan
Born in New York City, New York, US, Khan moved to India to pursue a career in Bollywood as an actress. She was known for her movies Ghajini and Housefull. The British-American actress was MIA from the industry for quite a sometime after her last movie in 2010 Housefull. She was found dead in her Juhu, Mumbai house after hanging herself on Monday, 3 June 2013. 4 days later on the 7th, her sister found a six-page hand-written note from her residence. The note was supposedly addressed to her boyfriend actor Sooraj Pancholi. A recent abortion was mentioned by some sources. Her mother suspected something to be wrong in the case. Pancholi was taken into custody regarding the case, he was charged abetting the murder. The actor has denied involvement in Khan’s death. As of now, the case has not yet been settled.
Kushal Punjabi
Born on 23 April 1977, Kushal belongs to a Sindhi Family. He enjoyed dance theatre and music, which later aided in his career. The actor was noted for his work in Lakshya, Kaal Ishq Mei Marjawan (TV Series). He had done 20 TV shows, 5 films in his career. The actor was found dead at his residence in Mumbai. He committed suicide by hanging himself on 26 December 2019. He reportedly suffered from Depression. Punjabi had left a note before committing suicide which stated his property will be distributed among his parents and son.
Sejal Sharma
Known for her work in Star Plus Drama Dil Toh Happy Hain Ji and Azad Parindey, Sejal Sharma was a Rajasthani Native. The actress was found hanging from the ceiling on 25 January 2020. She was found by a friend of hers. Reports suggest that the actress wrote a suicide note indicating she was depressed due to her career not blooming as she expected. However, according to her mother, she was not depressed and had even got a leading role in a show.
Sushant Singh Rajput
Sushant was one of the most loved actors in Bollywood with the hits such as MS Dhoni, Chhichhore. In the list of deaths of Bollywood stars, his death shocked the whole of India and his fans abroad. He was found dead in his Mumbai situated flat. He apparently hung himself on 14 June 2020. His suicide news took over every news channel. His friends, fans, and family members believe it was not a suicide and allegedly he murdered. His supposed girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty had a huge role in this case, who stood by her statement that he was under depression and took this step as he wasn’t able to cope with the situation. Her chat history suggested she gave drugs to him without his knowledge. Since many Bollywood names have been brought to light for drug abuse.
Kuljeet Randhawa
Model and actress Kuljeet Randhawa was born in West Bengal. She ventured into acting in 1997. The actress was recognized for her work in Hip Hip Hurray, Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan. She committed suicide on 8 February 2006 in her apartment in Mumbai. The actress left a suicide note behind stating she is ending her life as she was not able to cope with the pressure of life.
Nafisa Joseph
Born in Delhi, India, Nafisa Joseph was a Model, TV Presenter, Actress. Her mother Usha Joseph was a descendant of Tagore. She started her modeling career at the age of 12. She won Femina Miss India 1997. She hung herself in her apartment in Mumbai on 29 July 2004. Her parents have stated that she took such a drastic step as her marriage was called off with businessman Gautam Khanduja. Accordingly, Gautam had told Nafisa that he had been divorced for two years but she found out that he was still married. Nafisa’s parents pressed charges against Khanduja for her death. There wasn’t any evidence to prove he was guilty.
Silk Smitha
Silk Smitha started acting in 1979 and worked predominantly in South Indian films. In the ’80s she was noted most sought-after erotic actress. In her career, she had done more than 450 films in different languages. She was found dead by her friend Anuradha on September 23, 1996. She called Anuradha the same morning to talk about some matters that were disturbing her. In the postmortem, high amounts of alcohol were found in her body.
Manmeet Grewal
Known for his work in Aadat Se Majboor and Kuldeepak, Manmeet Grewal committed suicide on May 15, 2020. He was under financial pressure due to no work in the Corona pandemic. His wife was there at the time he locked and hung himself. His wife tried to call neighbors but nobody showed up, thinking Manmeet might have contracted Corona. He was survived by his wife and parents.
Preksha Mehta
Preksha Mehta was recognized for her work in Laal Ishq, Crime Patrol. The actress hung herself from the ceiling fan at her residence in Indore on 25 May 2020. She was found by her father who brought her to the hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. Her one-page-long suicide note stated she tried hard to stay positive through these times but couldn’t. The note read as follows.
"Mere toote huye sapno ne mere confidence ka dam tod diya hai, main mare huye sapnon ke saath nahi jee sakti. Iss negativity ke saath rehna mushkil hai. Pichle ek saal se maine bohot koshish ki. Ab mein thak gayi hoon"
(My shattered dreams have broken my confidence, I can’t live with dead dreams. It's difficult to live in this negativity. I have been trying since the past one year. I am tired now).
Susheel Godwa (Kannada Actor)
Susheel Gowda was an actor and fitness trainer. He was known for his work in the Kannada soap opera “Anthapura” and the movie “Salaga.” He took his own life on 7 July 2020 in his Induvalu, Mandya located residence. A lengthy suicide note was recovered from the site.
